Jean-Philippe Mateta (simply known as “Mateta”), born on June 28, 1997, holds dual French and Democratic Republic of the Congo nationality. He is a professional French footballer who plays as a centre-forward/striker. Mateta began his career at Châteauroux. In 2016, he joined Ligue 1 side Lyon on a five-year contract for a transfer fee of €2 million, plus performance-related bonuses worth up to €3 million; his former club retained 20% of any future resale proceeds. He made his Lyon debut on September 21, 2016, coming on as a substitute in a match against Montpellier. During the 2017–18 season, he was loaned to Le Havre in Ligue 2, where he excelled by scoring 19 goals in 37 league appearances. In June 2018, he moved to Bundesliga side Mainz 05 on a four-year deal, becoming the club’s most expensive signing ever. On April 5, 2019, he scored his first career hat-trick in a convincing win over Freiburg. In January 2021, he joined Crystal Palace on an 18-month loan deal worth €3 million, with a buyout clause set at €15 million; in January 2022, he made the transfer permanent. During the 2023–24 season, he had an outstanding performance, earning the club’s Player of the Year award – becoming the first Frenchman to receive this honor. That season, he scored 16 goals, a personal best in the Premier League, and also achieved the club’s first Premier League hat-trick in nearly nine years. In the 2024–25 season, he helped his team win its first major trophy – the FA Cup – by providing the assist for the winning goal in the final. Earlier in the season, he missed several matches due to a serious head injury but returned to play wearing a protective mask. Mateta has represented France at both U19 and U21 levels. In 2024, he was selected for the French Olympic team for the Paris Games (as one of the overage players), where he finished as the tournament’s third-highest goalscorer, helping his team secure the silver medal.
