The file came from a provincial team coach, with exactly one question attached: look at this for me, is this kid worth a three-year contract. I sat looking at that sheet for a long time. There were names. There were placings. There were marks. There were medals. Everything a news bulletin needs. And not a single variable capable of answering the most expensive question of this season.
Vietnamese athletics has just moved through a dense cycle: SEA Games 31 at home in May 2026, SEA Games 32 in Phnom Penh in May 2026, SEA Games 33 in Thailand in December 2026, and the next major appointment is the 2026 Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya in September. Each time, the whole system mobilises. Provincial sports departments, training centres, army and police units all carry medal quotas for the National Sports Festival, and the market moves according to those quotas.
Most readers do not see this: Vietnamese athletics has a real transfer market, it simply does not surface in the press the way football does. A nineteen-year-old eight-hundred-metre runner in Dong Thap can be invited to Binh Duong or Hanoi on a three-year contract with a support payment, a school placement and a committed medal quota. The price of that contract rests on two things only: medals already won, and the impression left on whoever was sitting in the stands.
Nobody prices on process data. Because process data does not exist in a form that can be traded, sold, or produced when two parties sit down at the table.

In twenty-five years of watching tracks, I have sat in many stands, from My Dinh to provincial tracks with a few hundred spectators. Most of that work has been turning over raw results and working out what actually happened on the track. I will walk through them the way I walked through the six blank columns in that results file.
The wind column.
World Athletics rules require a wind reading for every sprint up to two hundred metres and for the long jump and triple jump, and a record is only ratified if the wind does not exceed two metres per second. Anyone who has ever prepared a record file knows that number by heart. The problem lies elsewhere: a strong tailwind just under the limit can take between a tenth and more than two tenths of a second off a hundred metres, depending on the athlete's build and technique. On the results sheet, that mark looks identical to a legal one.
At Vietnamese tracks, wind readings are almost never published lane by lane. Nobody records whether that heat had a tailwind or a headwind, how strong, or at what point in the session. We have the winner, the mark, the medal, and nothing about the physical conditions. Without a wind column, every speed comparison is a comparison between two different sets of conditions.
Altitude belongs in the same column. Most of the world's fast tracks sit at meaningful altitude, where thinner air reduces drag. Vietnam has no such venue, so Vietnamese athletes get no altitude dividend. But the problem runs the other way too: place a Vietnamese mark beside the mark of an athlete training at altitude and the visible gap may be overstated. Both directions need the same column to correct. We do not have that column.

The equipment column.
In 2026 a research group published findings showing that a racing shoe with a carbon-fibre plate improved running economy by around four per cent compared with conventional racing shoes of the period. An athlete who runs one very fast final may have hit the exact peak of a season, or may have had the one day when everything lined up: wind, temperature, opponents, starting rhythm. Neither possibility is resolved by a single race.
My rule is simple: no judgement on an athlete's level before a run of at least three consecutive seasons. Three seasons, not three races. At national championship level, three seasons is enough time to separate the improver from the lucky. In practice, we crown a talent after one final, then sign the contract, then set the medal quota, all on a single data point.
Unratified training marks are a different kind of data, and they are being used in the wrong place.
During the transfer season I receive more and more phone-filmed clips, with a stopwatch visible on screen and a caption about a session rep. Training marks have value: they show direction of development, they show an athlete willing to sprint, they show what a coach is testing. But they lack electronic timing, wind measurement, competitive conditions, officials. They can persuade. They cannot price.
The danger is that training marks get compared directly with competition marks, and once that comparison is repeated often enough it sets a price in the internal transfer market. That is why I sort data into three tiers: the ratified tier, the observed tier, and the word-of-mouth tier. Only the first should be used to sign a long-term contract.
The splits column.
This is the column I regret most when I look at that file. Without splits you cannot build a pacing profile. In middle distance, the four-hundred-metre split of a fifteen-hundred-metre race tells you whether the athlete is conserving or being dragged along by someone else's pace. The final segment tells you whether the kick is real or simply the consequence of the field slowing. The two look identical on a results sheet and are completely different when you have to decide who runs the final.
In 2026, when pressing-metric analysis was still uncommon in Vietnam, I did not wait for a platform to publish the data. I built the spreadsheet and entered every match myself. The medical file and career-arc column.
In every transfer negotiation in other sports, the medical file sets the price. In Vietnamese athletics it barely exists as a transferable document. No weekly training-load log, no injury history recorded by site, no data on sessions missed. Someone signing a nineteen-year-old to a three-year deal does not know what risk they are buying.
A career in athletics is short compared with football. A sprinter may peak at twenty-three and decline at twenty-eight. A distance runner follows a different curve. Without that column, every long-term contract is a bet that the athlete's curve will match the contract's curve. Nobody measures that by eye.
When I sat in stands during matches with no spectators, I learned something that twenty thousand people used to drown out: data. The sound of spikes on the surface, the change in breathing after the four-hundred-metre mark, the sound of an acceleration timed exactly right — all of it is audible when the stands are empty. That is the observer's advantage, and it is only worth something if it is written down as numbers. Otherwise it fades with the afternoon.
Now the part I have to state clearly, because it is the part most easily misread.
Vietnam's athletics medal count has risen in recent years. That rise coincides with at least three changes at once: a SEA Games hosted at home, the spread of plated racing shoes, and provincial investment in medal quotas for the National Sports Festival. Four variables moving in the same direction. None of them separated out and measured.
Correlation is not causation. This is the sentence a data analyst must say even when it dilutes a good story. A rising medal count does not prove a better training system. It proves only that during that period several things improved together, and that we lack the tools to say how much each contributed. Separating them requires process data, and process data sits in those six blank columns.
The first reflex for most people when a mark improves quickly is suspicion. I understand that reflex, but I think it is aimed at the wrong target. The person who loses most from missing data is not the spectator, but the athlete. Someone running at their true level, training to the programme, sleeping and eating to the process, but with no data file to prove it, will be priced below their real value and suspected beyond what is warranted. Data here has a protective function, not only an exposing one.
Luck is the residual the model cannot explain, and I never round it to zero. But I do not use it to fill a blank column either. If it has not been measured, leave it blank and note why. That is my professional boundary as a data consultant: never mix a club's proprietary data into public writing, and never turn a gap in information into an assertion.
A season should be read as a sequence of probabilities, not a sequence of events. A sequence of events gives you a medal table. A sequence of probabilities tells you who is likely to repeat that mark in September 2026 in Aichi-Nagoya, with no home crowd, with opponents on equivalent shoes, and with officials who are not Vietnamese.

The fix is small: one person on the stopwatch, one person recording wind, one shoe-model field in the entry sheet. The fix is hard in one respect only — it has to start before you know the result.
