Milton Keynes Ladies' Charity Table Tennis Tournament, 2nd Edition: 14 Women, Over 100 Bras and £650 Raised for a Community

When 14 women walked into Milton Keynes Table Tennis Centre on September 6, they were not carrying ranking ambitions. Instead, they brought old bras, words of encouragement, and a shared goal. A few hours later, more than 100 bras had been collected for recycling and £650 had been raised for Breast Cancer Now. Julie Snowdon, secretary of the centre and a Table Tennis England staff member, organised the second annual ladies' charity tournament. The idea grew from monthly ladies-only sessions already held at the centre. The event had two aims: fundraising and widening female participation in table tennis. Breast cancer was chosen as the focus because it directly affects the same group the centre wants to welcome. The format was simple: two group rounds, followed by a main event and a consolation final. The organisers stressed “fun and fair play”. There were no national ranking points and no ITTF or WTT involvement. That simplicity created a very different atmosphere from a high-stakes competition. From a purely technical perspective, there is almost no tactical data to analyse. No serve percentages, no rally lengths, no pressuring indices. That absence is not a flaw. It is a signal: this was a community fundraiser, not a tactical laboratory. Players came to enjoy themselves and to contribute, not to chase Olympic qualification. Yet from a social-data perspective, the event offers useful numbers: 14 women took part; more than 100 bras were collected for Against Breast Cancer's recycling appeal; £650 was raised for Breast Cancer Now; and the next ladies' session is scheduled for November 1, 10am to 12pm. Analysts often ignore events without rankings because those events do not immediately produce clean data. But rankings only show the visible part of the pyramid. Looked at from above, this tournament changes nothing in the world top 100. Looked at from below, it keeps the door of the training hall open for women. The real risk facing table tennis is not a lack of champions. It is a lack of regular sessions with enough participants. A 14-player tournament may seem small, but it reinforces the habit of returning to the hall. For older women and beginners, the biggest barrier is often the fear of being compared. When organisers put fun above winning, they remove that psychological obstacle. The more useful question is not when the centre will produce a national champion. It is whether local women will want to come back next week. Attendance data from the November 1 session will provide an answer. If sign-ups increase, that is a more meaningful signal than any ranking table. Numbers do not lie; we just often count the wrong things.
