Resources for Educators

Dual Language, Bilingual Education and English as a New Language

Collaborative planning is necessary for the success of dual language, bilingual programs as well as the development of solid English as a New Language programs.  I have compiled the following resources for educators to explore as either a starting point in the creation of a program or in their journey to strengthening their existing ones.

CUNY NYSIEB

The CUNY-NYSIEB (City University of New York New York State Initiative on Emergent Bilinguals) has produced a number of practical reports for both school leaders and principals.

In particular, please consult the following two guides:

Translanguaging:  A CUNY NYSIEB Guide for Educators.

A Translanguaging Guide for Writing: A CUNY NYSIEB Guide for Educators.

Center for Applied Linguistics (CAL)

The Center for Applied Linguistics (CAL) produces a range of reports for programs offering dual language bilingual and English as  New Language programs.  A particularly helpful document is the CAL Guiding Principals for Dual Language Education.

Useful Articles & Books

The following are some articles and books that can serve as launching points for study groups.

Tasha Tropp Laman:  From Ideas to Word: Writing Strategies for English Language Learners.

Danling Fu: Writing Between Languages.
